Dublin Flamenco Festival 2011.

Peña Flamenca El Indalo proudly presents Dublin Flamenco Festival 2011 / 23rd – 31st July

Dublin Flamenco Festival 2011, the first ever event of its kind in Ireland, will take place from Saturday 23 July to Sunday 31 July 2011.

The festival will feature some of today's most celebrated and influential artists in the world of flamenco. The programme celebrates the roots of flamenco in song, its accompaniment by clapping, the guitar and other instruments, and the incorporation of heartfelt and dramatic dance, the element for which the art form is probably best known today.

From avant-garde to traditional, critics and audiences will discover a diversity of styles and interpretations of the art of flamenco, which in 2010 was recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

”What distinguishes the Dublin Flamenco Festival programme is the exquisite balance between the pure, gipsy tradition and the new trends in dance and music,” says Spanish journalist Manuel Moraga (Radio Exterior de España).

The festival is organized by Dublin-based Peña Flamenca El Indalo, a non-profit organisation with a reputation for continually bringing the finest flamenco artists from Spain.

Director Nathalie Moyano González has this to say about the event, “We’re hugely excited to bring this unique programme to Dublin. We’ve been delighted by the response of Irish audiences to our productions, with a sell-out show at The Helix as part of our first nationwide tour last September.”

“The theme for Dublin Flamenco Festival 2011 is the building of bridges,“ she continues. “The most obvious bridge is that between Spain and Ireland, whose own traditions of song, dance and music have much in common with flamenco. Bridging cultures and promoting the art of flamenco are at the heart of our initiative. We are particularly pleased with the level of interest and support shown by Spanish institutions, which we feel positions Dublin Flamenco Festival alongside the more established festivals worldwide.”

This first edition of Dublin Flamenco Festival places Dublin on the map for all flamenco “aficionados” and professionals. The festival will provide Irish audiences and visitors alike with the opportunity to experience the very best of

flamenco right here in Dublin. Already visitors from abroad are booking their tickets for the unique opportunities offered by the festival.

Performances will be held in The Theatre at The Helix, DCU, with workshops, conferences and talks taking place in various venues around Dublin. Topics will range from the history of flamenco to Federico García Lorca’s poetry. A flamenco-themed photo exhibition of twenty original prints, organised in collaboration with olliart.com, will also be on display throughout the month of July at the festival headquarters in The Liffey Trust Centre, Upper Sheriff Street.

The festival is funded by the Arts Council and Instituto Andaluz del Flamenco. Radio Exterior de España and deflamenco.com are cultural partners, and RTÉ lyric fm is a national radio partner. Peña Flamenca El Indalo would also like to acknowledge the support of Waltons New School of Music, The Liffey Trust and Phonic Studios.
